The Indies Strategic Technology family of funds (previously named Indies Pelago) is a first-mover strategy in Southeast Asia, originated by us in 2018. The funds seek to generate superior, risk-adjusted returns for investors to participate in the vibrant technology investment ecosystem of Southeast Asia, without the exposure to early-stage venture capital risk.
To achieve this, the funds invest into a basket of vertical-leading companies primarily via direct secondary equity stakes, in anticipation of a significant liquidity event in the medium term.
Strong macroeconomic fundamentals, favourable demographics and one of the world’s highest internet adoption rates have provided important impetus in propelling the growth of Southeast Asia’s technology market over the last few years. A flush of new technology-backed companies reimagining how consumers spend and businesses innovate have proliferated within the market, and in turn attracted significant investor funding from all over the world.
With the region’s technology companies taking almost a decade from formation to get to a significant liquidity event, we believe that there exists intermediate liquidity demand from early investors and employees. Thus far, secondary share sales in Southeast Asia have remained mostly unorganised and piecemeal. Indies Strategic Technology offers an institutional avenue for these shareholders to encash their stakes in an organised manner, while providing the opportunity for companies to consolidate and optimise their capitalisation tables.
Additionally, the enlarging pool of market participants and increasing funding rounds are creating more depth and breadth in the Southeast Asian technology market, hence an ever-growing pipeline of opportunities for our strategy.
The funds adopt a thoughtful portfolio construction approach substantiated by rigorous fundamental analysis to invest into direct secondary stakes in high growth, mid-to-late stage pre-IPO technology companies within Southeast Asia. Selectively, it will also consider primary and/or structured equity investments to gain access to high-quality companies. The resulting portfolio is a diversified curation of the region’s technology leaders that are poised to benefit from the burgeoning growth of the world’s fastest-growing internet market.
